How to calculate steel cost

The cost of a steel project is built up per tonne and then scaled by the tonnage:

Cost per tonne = Material rate (× wastage) + Fabrication rate + Coating rate

Total cost = Cost per tonne × Total tonnage

The calculator above lets you enter each rate in your own currency and set a wastage percentage on the material, then shows the breakdown, total cost and cost per tonne.

Typical cost components

ComponentWhat it covers
MaterialRaw steel sections / plate, priced per tonne, plus a wastage allowance for offcuts.
Fabrication / labourCutting, drilling, welding, assembly, finishing and shop overheads, per tonne.
Coating / treatmentGalvanising, painting or fireproofing, per tonne (optional).

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate steel cost per tonne?

Add the material rate per tonne (including wastage), the fabrication rate per tonne and any coating rate per tonne. Multiply the result by the tonnage for the total project cost.

What does steel fabrication cost include?

Cutting, drilling, welding, assembly, finishing and shop overheads — usually quoted as a rate per tonne on top of the material cost.

How much wastage should I allow?

Around 3–7% is common for structural steel; set your own figure in the calculator.
